Chiropractor vs. Medical Doctor

What is the education of a chiropractor? This is a question that we are often asked as chiropractors. Many do not consider us doctors, when in fact we are a doctor of chiropractic after completing our education.

Many want to know how our education as a chiropractor compares to that of a medical doctor or medical education. So I thought I would put together a little post to show the comparison of the education that a doctor of chiropractic receives compared with a doctor of medicine.

Here is a chart showing the comparison of education in classroom hours.

In addition to this, a chiropractic education also includes classroom hours and hand on in the subjects of spinal adjustments, manipulation, and advanced radiology (x-ray).

Chiropractors go through an immense amount of schooling to recieve a “Doctor of Chiropractic” degree (also known as a D.C.). Their collegiate agenda is as follows:
– Graduate from a four year college.
– Completing at least two years undergraduate study, with a focus on the sciences.
– Four years of Chiropractic Education.
– Take mandatory internships.
– At least 900 hours of work in a Chiropractic Clinic.
– After graduating, pass a written and oral board exams, at national and state levels.

A Chiropractor may opt to choose to advance their degree in an area of specialty.
These areas include: Chiropractic neurology, radiology, sports medicine, as well as many other fields.

It will vary state to state on the scope of practice, or what your chiropractor is permitted to do in their state. However, this post gives you an overall picture on the education that a doctor of chiropractic receives, and shows that you are in good hands when you utilize chiropractors as part of your healthcare.
