Have You Had Your Whey Today?

Whey protein has many benefits. We require protein to stay healthy. Most people believe that we get enough protein in our daily diet, but due to the lifestyle that most people live, including fast-food, “quick” easy home meals, microwaved food, and eating on the run, most of us do not. Protein is essential to our bodies. So how can you get more protein into your diet? Supplement with whey protein!

Whey protein is not just for body-builders or people who go to the gym. It is a beneficial supplement for everyone. Whey protein is the soluble portion of the protein in milk. Research confirms that whey protein is superior when it comes to stimulating protein synthesis (the process in muscle fibers that leads to increased muscle growth), according to Jim Stoppani, Ph.D., Senior Science Editor for Muscle and Fitness magazine. Essentially, protein synthesis is the building of muscle tissue that has either becomes damaged or needs repair from injury.

Whey protein is one of the fastest digesting protein powders you can buy. It’s amino acids, including it’s high concentration of branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs), which include leucine, isoleucine, and valine, are rapidly absorbed into the bloodstream and travel to the muscles.

Whey protein also increases levels of glutathione, a powerful antioxidant in your body. Glutathione is an immune system booster and a detoxifier. It stimulates your body to repair damage caused by stress, pollution, radiation, infection, drugs, poor diet, aging, injury, trauma, and burns.

Daily protein requirements include a minimum of 56 grams for adult men, 46 grams for adult women, and 71 grams for pregnant/lactating women. Growing children also require a minimum of 45-55 grams of protein. Again, these are the minimum requirements. The more active you are, or if your body in in a recovery mode from any type of stress or injury, the requirement is more.

One scoop of a natural, high-quality whey protein a day will give you about 22-26 grams of protein. This is a great way to start your day. Personally, I start the day with a scoop mixed into my coffee. It replaces the higher fat and calorie creamer that I used to add. Instead I start my day right.
