Chiropractic and Back Pain


Did you know that back pain is the second most common reason that people visit their doctor? Eighty percent of people suffer from back pain at some point in their life (ACA Today). Back pain is most commonly caused by activities in our everyday lives. This type of back pain is mechanical, or due to muscle spasm, overuse, altered posture, and decreased motion in the spine. Most cases of back pain are not due to infection, fracture, cancer, etc.

Everyday our backs are put to use in our activities. This can be anything from physical activity, sitting at work, cleaning our house, and playing/picking up our children. We do not have to think about using our back to do these things, we just do. In fact, most of us take for granted how much our back does for us until it hurts. The back has many bones, joints, ligaments, and muscles that can be sprained, strained, irritated, and damaged, all of which can cause back pain immediately or over time. For example, let’s say that 10 years ago you were involved in an auto accident, and at the time, you may have had a couple days of stiffness in the back, but thankfully you were not “hurt”. Or so you thought. A car accident, or any accident, can cause micro trauma to the spine and its associated muscles, joints, and ligaments. Although that stiffness went away after a couple of days, the damage was done. Now for the last 10 years, you have not had back pain, but your job consists of sitting at a desk over a computer 8 hours a day, and then you go home to carry/play with your 1 year old child, cook dinner, clean house, and go to bed. Then one morning, you bend over to pick something up, and suddenly you feel horrible back pain and muscle spasm. Do you think this was caused by bending over? No. This was just the event that allowed the symptoms of back pain to appear. The micro trauma that occurred in the accident, and the micro trauma that occur due to our everyday life, did not just go away. A recent study showed that when back pain or injury is not treated, it may go away temporarily but will most likely return (ACA Today). The study demonstrated that in more than 33% of the people who experience back pain, the pain lasts for more than 30 days. Only 9% of the people who had back pain for more than 30 days were pain free 5 years later (J Manipulative Physiol Ther 2003 May; 26(4):213-9). The outcome of a medical research council trial, comparing chiropractic with conventional hospital treatment for low back pain, revealed that during the three years of treatment, 29 percent more improved under chiropractic care than those treated by hospital care (Dynamic Chiropractic-Sept.12,1995,Vol 13, Issue 19).

What can you do? Chiropractic is able to address these mechanical causes of back pain.
